How to start creating your slide show

Go back to your Drive, click +New, and choose Google Slides. Pick a template or build from scratch.

From there, mostly everything you'll want to do is in the toolbar.

  1. The comment box shows you a comment history, lets you set notification preferences, and lets you add a comment.
  2. The Present option, if you click on the dropdown arrow, gives you the option of what view you want to present in, and if you want to present from the beginning.
  3. The share button works exactly the same as it does in Google Docs.



The menus in Google Slides are similar to those in Google Docs, with the addition of a Slide menu and an Arrange menu.


Slide Menu

Google Slides "slide" menu1. New slide inserts a new page in your presentation.

2. Duplicate slide copies the slide you're currently viewing, and adds it to your presentation right after the slide you're currently viewing.

3. Delete slide will get rid of the current slide.

4. Skip slide sets the presentation so that when you play it for your audience, they won't see the current slide.

5. Move slide lets you push the slide one forward, one back, or to the very beginning or end.

6. Change background... lets you choose a color or image for the background, or you can reset to the theme's preset background.

7. Apply layout lets you edit the layout of your slide by choosing from a variety of templates. 

8. Change transition lets you edit the animation between slides.

9. Edit master lets you edit the entire theme to make it more what you want and less what Google already had in mind.

10. Change theme lets you choose from a variety of themes that affect the look and style of your presentation.



Arrange Menu

Google Slides arrange menu1. Order is a way to arrange objects like images or shapes to the "front" or "back." Think of it as though your slide is a piece of paper, and the objects you send to the "back" are being glued down first, and anything in the "front" is being glued down on top of those in the back.

2. Align - If you've put multiple objects in your slide, you can click and drag to draw a box around them, and then the align option becomes available. This allows you to line up everything on one side or the other, or you can center-align them all in the middle.

3. Distribute lets you space out your objects either vertically or horizontally.

4. Center on page moves your objects to the very middle of the slide, either vertically, horizontally, or both.

5. Rotate can turn your object 90 degrees in either direction, OR you can flip it horizontally or vertically.

6. Group is a way to way to move and/or resize several objects at the same time without changing how they're spaced out with one another.

7. Ungroup does the opposite and separates the objects so that you can edit them one-by-one.

Tips & Tricks

Linking to slides within the presentation

Here's what to do if you want to be able to click on something in one slide that will take you directly to another slide. (An example of this could be making it so that when you click on a quote you've used in Slide 3, it takes you to your References on Slide 11.)

1. Highlight what you want to be able to click on to take you to another slide.

2. Go to the Insert menu.

3. Click Link.

4. Instead of pasting or searching for a link, click Slides in this presentation.

5. Choose the slide you would like to link to.

Easily find images to add visual content

Google Slides has an option called Explore that lets you search the web within the same window. It brings up Web, Images, and Drive results, but Images makes it especially easy to insert visual content.

1. Click Explore or Google explore option

2. Search for the image you want.

3. Click the Images tab.

4. Click the little plus sign at the top right of the image you'd like to use.
