Quick Start to Research

Off Campus Access to Databases

To use ICC Library Databases off campus, please sign-in using your ICC username and password. ICC usernames are the first part of your ICC email address, without the @lab.icc.edu part. Passwords are ICC (all capital letters) and the last five digitals of your social security number. 

If you do not know your login and password, please contact the Library's Reference Desk at 309-694-5355 or 309-690-6837 and we will be more than happy to assist you.

Basic Information

This Quick Start to Research is designed to guide you through the process of doing research and to give you helpful tips and tools to accomplish your research.

Steps in Effective Research

1. Define your information need

Define the need, problem or question

2. Find information

Locate, access and retrieve information from a variety of sources

3. Evaluate information

Assess the information's currency, reliability, accuracy and purpose/point of view.  Use the C.R.A.P. test.

4. Organize information

Compile information so it can be used to meet the information need

5. Communicate information

Communicate the information ethically and legally by writing a paper, giving a presentation or in another format.  Do not plagiarize. Use citations and have a works cited page.

Hearing Impaired and Videos

 

YouTube videos can have captions turned on.

Once the video is playing, arrow over the “CC” in the play bar and select “Transcribe audio” then click ok. 

You will then view the video with subtitles generated by Google’s speech recognition technologies.

Please ask a library staff member if you are having difficulties with the captioning.
